Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

Fatigue is a common health problem today, and we see new CFS patients everyday in our clinic. Common symptoms of CFS include:

  • Inexplicable weakness
  • Confusion
  • Lack of focus
  • Forgetfulness and memory loss
  • Chest tightness
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Muscle and joint pain

These symptoms cannot simply be corrected with sleep. The cause of CFS remains unclear, but research indicates that it is likely related to extreme stress or depression, leading to disorder in the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. Some theories have also suggested that past viral infections contribute to the development of CFS.

Western medicine is still not very effective in treating CFS. Most Western Doctors would probably recommend taking vitamins, fish oil, antiviral medications, and immunoglobulin magnesium injections supplemented with psychological support. However, these measures have not produced significant results.

Treatment based on TCM:

Chinese medicine is especially effective in treating CFS by balancing, nourishing, soothing, and unblocking Qi in the liver, spleen and kidney meridians. We accomplish this using acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbs.

  • The liver meridian controls blood, tendon, ligaments and the digestive system
  • The spleen meridian controls digestion, muscles and movement of limbs
  • The kidney meridian is the root of other organs' Qi, and is therefore related to hormones, the reproductive system, bone marrow, and the brain
